The Office for Public Engagement and Scholarship (OPES) advances MSU’s engagement mission by supporting faculty, staff, and students in their community-engaged research and creative activities, teaching, and service. OPES also contributes to the University’s reputation as a national and international leader in community engagement by ensuring that MSU is represented in critical organizations, contributing to the literature, and through other scholarly activities.
OPES facilitates work in the following key areas:
- Community-engaged research: Supporting and consulting on the design, implementation, and assessment of collaborative research
- Faculty and professional development: Coordinating and providing educational opportunities that build capacity for community-engaged scholarship
- Facilitation of mutually beneficial university-community partnerships:
- Community partnerships: Fostering and facilitating networks of potential partners
- Workforce and economic development partnerships: Supporting partnerships aimed at regional and state economic growth
- Arts and cultural partnerships: Fostering and supporting collaborative arts and cultural partnerships
- Institutional research, policy, and recognition:
- Conducting institutional research
- Fostering recognitions of exemplary community-engaged work
- Promoting policies supportive of community-engaged scholarship and university outreach
- Providing consultations with other higher education institutions and organizations
Drawing on its expertise in specific areas, OPES also works collaboratively with the other UOE departments to enhance and support the community engagement efforts of faculty, staff, and students across the University.
