Recognizing highly engaged community-based research, creative activity, teaching, and service collaborations that positively impact both the community and scholarship

Each year, Michigan State University invites nominations for the Community Engagement Scholarship Award (CESA), conferred in recognition of exemplary engaged scholarship with a community partner.

One scholar and her/his partner(s) is recognized at the University’s annual Awards Convocation, where they share a stipend of $5,000. The winning partnership also represents MSU in the competition for the regional W. K. Kellogg Foundation Community Engagement Scholarship Awards and the national C. Peter Magrath Community Engagement Scholarship Award. These are among the most prestigious recognitions of exemplary engaged scholarship in the United States, and also provide cash prizes, including $20,000 for the top national award.

The University's annual Awards Convocation is Tuesday, February 6, 2018.

Instructions and Forms

Faculty, administrators, colleagues, students, or community partners can initiate nominations; self-nominations are also welcome. It is expected that nominees will be aware of the nomination and will participate significantly in preparation of the application. Applications must be submitted to the dean or administrator of the nominee’s major administrative unit (MAU) to be forwarded for University-level consideration.
