Hiram E. Fitzgerald (Ph.D, 1967: University of Denver) currently is University Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Psychology. Previously, he served 16 years as Associate Provost for University Outreach and Engagement at Michigan State University. He also served as president of the Engagement Scholarship Consortium, past president and executive director of the Michigan Association for Infant Mental Health, and executive director of the World Association for Infant Mental Health. He is a member of the Tribal Early Childhood Research Center and the Native Children’s Research Exchange at the University of Colorado Denver. He is also a member of the National Advisory Board of the Buffett Early Childhood Institute at the University of Nebraska Omaha, is scientific advisor at the Rocky Mountain Prevention Research Center and chairs the External Advisory Board for Oklahoma State University’s Center for Integrative Research on Childhood Adversity. He currently serves as Secretary of the Child and Family Blog Board of Directors.

Fitzgerald’s areas of research include the study of the impact of adverse childhood experiences on children and families, with special focus on father-son relationships, the etiology of alcoholism, and broad issues related to the scholarship of engagement. He has over 600 publications, including journal articles, chapters, books, technical reports, and abstracts/proceedings.

He has received numerous awards, including the ZERO TO THREE Dolley Madison Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Development and Well Being of Very Young Children, the Michigan Association for Infant Mental Health Selma Fraiberg Award, and the designation of Honorary President from the World Association for Infant Mental Health. He is Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, and is an elected member of Academy of Community Engagement Scholarship and the International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame.
