SESSION 1: RESEARCH IMPACTS BASICS

This introductory session covers research impact basics, including what research impacts are, why they matter, and the essential elements of a successful broader impacts plan for NSF proposals.

SESSION 2: NSF CAREER AWARD PANEL

11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

In this panel discussion, Dr. Angela Wilson, John A. Hannah Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives in the College of Natural Science and former director of the Chemistry Division of the National Science Foundation, and three faculty members who have won CAREER awards offer their insights into how to write successful CAREER proposals that integrate their research and education plans.

SESSION 3: BROADENING PARTICIPATION IN STEM: DEI RESOURCES AND POTENTIAL PARTNERS

A key NSF broader impacts goal is to increase the participation of those historically underrepresented in STEM education and careers. This panel discussion will introduce participants to the rich array of programs and potential partners on the Michigan State University campus for researchers who want to pursue this critical goal.

SESSION 4: PARTNERS FOR ENGAGING THE PUBLIC IN SCIENCE

9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.

Engaging the public in your research and increasing the public’s understanding and appreciation of it is a key strategy for achieving research impacts. In this discussion, panelists from a variety of university facilities and programs will discuss how they engage with the public and strategies for partnering with them to involve the public in your research.

SESSION 5: SUPPORTS FOR INDUSTRY PARTNERSHIPS

11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

In this session, panelists representing university offices that support commercialization, entrepreneurship, and industry partnerships discuss their services and how best to collaborate with them to achieve your research impact goals.

SESSION 6: STRATEGIES FOR EFFECTIVE PARTNERSHIPS WITH NONPROFITS AND GOVERNMENT AGENCIES

1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

In this panel discussion, pairs of researchers and their community partners discuss strategies for effective collaboration between researchers and nonprofits and government agencies.
