JaKaira Lynn was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, where she learned early the importance of community, perseverance, and having people who believe in you. As a first-generation college student, JaKaira understands firsthand what it means to navigate higher education while learning the process along the way. Her own journey through college ultimately shaped her passion for making sure other students do not have to navigate that journey alone.
JaKaira attended Michigan State University, where she earned a B.A. in psychology with a minor in African studies. Her experiences as a student at MSU sparked a passion for student affairs, mentorship, and creating spaces where students feel seen, supported, and empowered. She went on to earn her master’s degree in student affairs and administration from MSU.
Throughout her time at MSU, JaKaira found many ways to pour back into the community that had helped shape her. She also served in leadership and advising roles with several student organizations, including On the Rise, Men of Action, Sistas That Care, and the Freshman Class Council. Across each of these experiences, her goal has remained the same: to help students recognize their value, find their voice, and know that they belong.
JaKaira currently serves as the interim program coordinator for the Upward Bound Scholars Program, where she supports high school students from the Lansing area as they prepare for college. Her work goes beyond college preparation. She believes in building relationships with students, celebrating their accomplishments, helping them navigate challenges, and giving them the encouragement to see themselves as college students and future leaders.
Her approach to working with students is deeply personal because she remembers what it felt like to be a student trying to figure things out for the first time. She knows how powerful it can be to have a mentor who answers the questions you are afraid to ask, an advocate who speaks up when you need support, and someone who reminds you that your circumstances do not define your future.
JaKaira is passionate about creating opportunities for students—particularly students from underrepresented and first-generation backgrounds—to thrive. She believes access is only the beginning; students also need community, mentorship, representation, and someone who genuinely believes in their potential.
Through her work, JaKaira hopes to be that person for students. She is committed to helping young people see possibilities for themselves, take up space in places they may not have imagined themselves belonging, and ultimately become the kind of leaders who create opportunities for those coming behind them.
